To the long list of benefits of stone-coated steel roofing, add this one: versatility.
Stone-coated steel panels have been used as traditional steep-slope roofing, as vertical siding and now as awnings.
New construction on Good Time Charlie’s restaurant in Des Moines, Iowa, was designed to have large awnings shading seven large windows on two sides of the building. The architect called for the awnings to match the visible part of the steep roof.
The problem was the roof had to have the Mediterranean tile look to match the buildings nearby and adhere to local covenants. Concrete or clay tile weighed far too much to use for awnings.
That is when Jeff Bakeris of Bakeris Roofing & Construction in Runnells, Iowa, stopped by the site to introduce himself to the project managers. He told them about Metro Roof Products’ new Roman Tile. He told them about its extremely light weight — about 1-1/2 pounds per square foot — and its beautiful Mediterranean tile aesthetics. He educated them about the durability, extreme wind-uplift resistance and Class 4 hail warranty of stone-coated steel.

“The Metro Roman Tile’s look really sealed the deal,” Bakeris said. “It also was less expensive than concrete tile would have been. They were very happy.”
Bakeris built special awning frames and installed the Roman panels with similar fastening and edge details as many steep-slope roofing applications.
“People are really discovering the total versatility of Metro’s stone-coated steel panels,” said Pete Croft, vice president of marketing and sales for Metro Roof Products. “Few roofing products can be used so effectively in so many ways.”
